Nutsch Filter
The Nutsch Filter is an essential tool for management to evaluate the various crystallisation stages in the Boiling House, especially the low grade massecuites. The mother liquor is extracted from the massecuite for brix and purity analysis. From the analysis, the efficiency of the crystallisation process can be assessed by means of purity drops. This is also useful to assess the performance of C-centrifuges, for detection of over-washing or damaged screens that are letting small crystals through.

The SMRI has designed a new mini-Nutsch filter which is now in beta phase evaluation. The new smaller design complements the use of the SMRI-NIRS technology as the NIRS requires only a small sample for analytical predictions. The new design (see below) offers many advantages: it is much lighter than the current design (0.65 kg vs 8.00 kg), requires a much smaller quantity of massecuite to be taken and is far easier to handle and faster clean than the current design. The Mini-Nutsch is now available for purchase from Sugarequip.
